NOTE: Listen: if you’re predisposed to like books for whatever reason, do NOT fly to Amsterdam and go to Nijhof & Lee bookselllers. They’ll bleed you dry. You will find so many fantastic and bizarre printed-matter and design-y morsels there that you will not have any idea how fucked you are until you realize that you pawned your passport in an ill-remembered sleepless fugue to buy just one more ephemeral silkscreened mini-poster edition from them. For real, that place is crazy. Designwise, the only cure for it is to move to Portland and get an unpaid internship at Wieden+Kennedy building Flash banner ads for a new soon-to-be-announced flavor of Doritos. For me, there is no cure; I went too far. The polite term for what I have is “Mad Dutch Disease”; most other names are much less polite, but I can’t say they’re not fitting. For years I carried this book, purchased during one of those long-forgotten animalistic consumption jags, as a unflinchingly mute reminder of how far I’d fallen. And now, I pass this totem on to you, O reader, so that you might merely stumble where I finally fell. So like 25 bucks I am thinking. This book is actually in Dutch, as in the language, so caveat offeror.
According to Amazon, this book retails for $55.00— $30 more than what I’m asking — and ranks a sort of Sisyphean 2,871,069 in sales. The primary text of We Show Art: 10 Years SMBA is credited to Maxine Kopsa, Rogier Schumacher, Alicia Framis, Aernout Mik, Jonathan Monk, Saskia Olde Wolbers, and Michael Raedecker; Artimo put this particular 808-page paperback edition out on Aug. 2, 2004, with Dewey Decimal number 708.0. The ISBN is 9789075380767.
