NOTE: Do not be fooled — it’s another one of those “grid” books (see my partial enumeration in this item’s notes) but IN DISGUISE. It didn’t matter to me back in 2002, when I bought this; I was basically a Niggli Press fanboy. I’m not embarrassed or hating on my past self, but really it’s totally kind of funny, the way I would have gone up to a distinguished gentleman such as Willi Kunz, or maybe Bram de Does, all squealing with glee and being like “I HAVE ALL YOUR ALBUMS!!” and generally debasing myself. Graduate school helped with my acute case of sycophancy — lots of bigshot designers come through for workshops, and you end up having beers with them afterwards — as did the realization that you can come up with about 10 trillion ideas more thrilling than “a grid” in like a moments’ notice. Which is fine, really; grids are so important that calling them “useful” is seriously understating it, but they are a weird thing to freak out about… these indulgent obsessions start out all innocuous but then bam, before you know it you’re a slightly older balding guy in an ill-fitting sweater who won’t stop cornering people and telling them about his model trains. That does of course not reflect on these books or the fine gents who write them — it’s just the folly of youth, yo. I’m sure Willi Kunz’ sweaters fit him great.
According to Amazon, this book retails for $120.00— $55 more than what I’m asking — and ranks an understandable 423,404 in sales. The primary text of Typography: Macro + Microaesthetics is credited to Willi Kunz; Arthur Niggli put this particular 171-page hardcover edition out on April 5, 2000, with Dewey Decimal number 686.22. The ISBN is 3721203488.
