NOTE: This book was a very special gift — as you may be able to see from some of the images, it originally came from a military library (?!) and yeah actually it’s worth fetishizing, as books go. It was into icons before they were cool! By which I mean the seventies, which I understand were a truly nasty time for design, and like everything else, aesthetic or no, and I say that despite tidalwaves of nostalgia James Murphy and his ilk make me feel on the dancefloor when wielding a strictly-seventies arsenal. It was paradoxical times. I suppose I am somewhat authorized to talk about the seventies because I was born in them, but that’s a total technicality. Yeah anyway, this is your book if you’re into rose-colored Heisenbergian high/low culture stuff.
According to Amazon, this book retails for $72.00 and ranks a sort of Sisyphean 2,494,961 in sales. The primary text of Signet Signal Symbol is credited to Walter J. Diethelm; Hastings House Pub put this particular hardcover edition out on Sept. 1, 1976, with Dewey Decimal number None. The ISBN is 8550401401.
