NOTE: Once, I sat in the big Au Bon Pain in Harvard Square, up the street from the GSD, reading this copy of Mutations as conspicuously as possible in case Mr. Koolhaas walked in. I’m sure it will serve you equally well regardless of how you use it. Actually these late-90s Actar books are perfect for that sort of activity, because their plastic covers are resistant to the jets of coffee that your friend will definitely spew out at you in an uncontainable laughing fit when he realizes why you’re sitting there in the Au Bon Pain brandishing it so conspicuously. Anyway. Having actually (actually) read this book, I can tell you that its ductile sheath and uselessly bellicose ‘future-y’ typographic airs are, at the end of the day, the best possible aesthetic couch for the timid and prosaic documentation of a bunch of savvy globetrotting nerds on a sort of vacation. Really! Anyway that coffee-spew part of the Au Bon Pain incident didn’t actually happen, I made that detail up, so buy this book.
According to Amazon, this book retails for $49.00— $27 more than what I’m asking — and ranks an understandable 373,650 in sales. The primary text of Mutations is credited to Stefano Boeri, Harvard Project on the City, Muliplicity, Jean Attali, Moulier Boutang, Sanford Kwinter, Reinhold Grether, Stephano Boeri, Celine Rozenblat, Saskia Sassen, Yorgos Simeoforidis, Nadia Tazi, Mckenzie Wark, Francois Chaslin, Bart Lootsma, and ; Actar put this particular 720-page paperback edition out on March 15, 2001, with Dewey Decimal number 720.0. The ISBN is 8495273519.
